Read the Label Before the Laundry

An ordered six-step procedure for reading a care label, ending with the failure mode it prevents: ironing at 200 °C on a 110 °C garment.

Step 1 — find the wash tub symbol and its dots. The tub carries either a number (30, 40, 50, 60) or, in the US system, one to four dots for those same temperatures. A hand in the tub means gentle hand washing only, not above 40 °C. This is the first symbol to read because it sets the machine temperature for everything that follows.

Step 2 — set the machine to that exact °C before loading the drum. Do not round up: a 30 °C garment washed at 40 °C risks shrinkage and colour loss, and the risk doubles in stretch denim that carries up to 3% elastane.

Step 3 — check the triangle for bleaching. An empty triangle allows bleach, a crossed triangle bans it, and a triangle with one or two bars restricts the type to oxygen or non-chlorine bleach. Skipping this step is how whites end up yellowed and fibres weakened.

Step 4 — check the square for drying. One dot means tumble dry at reduced temperature and two dots mean normal temperature. A circle in the square symbolizes the clothes dryer, and a cross prohibits the operation it is drawn over. Read the square before the iron so a line-dry garment never meets a hot soleplate.

Step 5 — check the iron dots against 110 °C, 150 °C and 200 °C. One dot is 110 °C, two dots 150 °C, three dots 200 °C. Match the dots to the dial before the iron touches the fabric.

Step 6 — check the circle for dry cleaning and any cross that bans the action it covers. The circle marks professional cleaning, and a cross through any symbol on the label prohibits that operation outright.

The failure mode this procedure prevents is ironing at 200 °C on a 110 °C garment: the fabric scorches, synthetic fibres melt and the damage cannot be reversed. Running the six checks in order takes a few seconds and removes that risk before the iron is even switched on.

  • Find the wash tub symbol and its dots.
  • Set the machine to that °C.
  • Check the triangle for bleaching.
  • Check the square for drying (one dot reduced, two dots normal).
  • Check the iron dots against 110 / 150 / 200 °C.
  • Check the circle for dry cleaning and any cross that bans the action.
