Wash and Iron Temperatures

The exact temperatures behind the wash tub, the hand-wash mark, the iron dots and the tumble-dry dots, with their US dot equivalents.

The wash tub symbol marks four temperatures: 30 °C, 40 °C, 50 °C and 60 °C. In the US system the same four values appear as one to four dots inside the tub — one dot for 30 °C, two for 40 °C, three for 50 °C and four for 60 °C. The dots and the numbers describe the same water temperature, so a garment labelled either way gets the same wash.

A hand in the tub means gentle hand washing only, not above 40 °C. This mark overrides the dot count entirely: even if the fabric could tolerate 60 °C in a machine, the hand symbol restricts the wash to a cool hand cycle.

Iron dots stand for 110 °C (one dot), 150 °C (two dots) and 200 °C (three dots). One dot is the low dial setting for synthetics and delicate fabrics, two dots the medium setting for wool and blends, three dots the high setting for cotton and linen. A crossed-out iron bans pressing altogether.

Tumble drying follows the same dot logic. One dot requires drying at reduced temperature and two dots normal temperature. A circle in the square symbolizes the clothes dryer, and a cross prohibits the operation it is drawn over.

Matching each dot count to its dial setting is the practical task: read the tub first, set the machine, then read the iron and the dryer before the garment leaves the drum.

  • Wash tub 1 dot (US) = 30 °C / 86 °F
  • Wash tub 2 dots (US) = 40 °C / 104 °F
  • Wash tub 3 dots (US) = 50 °C / 122 °F
  • Wash tub 4 dots (US) = 60 °C / 140 °F
  • Hand in tub = gentle hand wash, not above 40 °C
  • Iron 1 dot = 110 °C, 2 dots = 150 °C, 3 dots = 200 °C
  • Tumble dry 1 dot = reduced temperature, 2 dots = normal temperature
